My little son has an activity centre whith vikings design. So as I read that babys like to find something new on this kind of toy now and then, I was planning to design a see monster since what feels like ages. I started that project already but then my yarn turned out to be too thick and I did not find any lighter yarn in the same colour. In the end my „Nessy“ got lost in my basket of not-yet-finished products. In the meantime I came up with a quick and relatively easy design for an octopus. He wears hat and collar and is quite charming. And I am very sure that he improves the motorik abilities of every child As I like to design my amigurumis without the need of sewing a lot, his arms are crocheted directly to the body. But of course you can also work them seperately and sew them on in the end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, here comes Mr. Octopus<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You need:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cotton yarn in dark and light blue
Crochet hook which is way too small for your yarn (I used 8-ply cotton yarn and a 2.0 hook), Crochet hook size 0.75
Crochet yarn in blue, white and red<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Soft stuffing<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Abbreviations<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ch = chain
Dc = double crochet
Sc = single crochet<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sl = sling stitch

1. R: 6sc into a magic ring
2. R: 6 inc (12 sc)
3. R: [sc, inc] 6x (18 sc)
4. R: [2 sc, inc] 6x (24 sc)
5. R: [3 sc, inc] 6x (30 sc)
6. R: [4 sc, inc] 6x (36 sc)
7. – 10. R: 36 sc
11. R: [4 sc, dec] 6x (30 sc)

Arms (8x)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. R: crochet 14 sc directly to the body as follows: 1 sl + 1 ch from the bottom line up, 3 sc into R: 19 to the left, 4 sc up, 3 sc to the right, 4 sc down so you’ll meet the first sc. It will be best to start where the spirals change, so you won’t have trouble with the junction. When working the second arm, you’ll have to crochet the last 4 sc into the same stitches as the 4 sc going up from the first arm (see picture), when doing the last arm, you’ll have to work like this on both sides (see picture).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. – 3. R: 14 sc
4. – 6. R: inc at the middle of the bottom, dec at the middle of the upper side (14 sc)
7. – 9. R: 3 dec at the bottom, 1 inc at the upper side (8 sc after R. 9)
10. & 11. R: 2 dec at the bottom, 1 inc at the upper side (6 sc after R. 11)
Cut yarn and sew up the arm<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I like it when the arms vary a little, so I leave out a round here and add one there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eyes and mouth<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Use crochet yarn in blue, white and red and hook size 0.75<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. R: in blue 8 sc into magic ring
2. R: in white 8 inc<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cut yarn and sew the eye to the octopus with yarn end<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stitch mouth underneath the eyes
Hat<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. R: 4 ch
2. R: 2 sc into second stitch, sc, 4 sc into 4. stitch, sc, 2 sc into last stitch (10 sc)
3. [sc, inc] 5x (15 sc)
4. – 6. R: 15 sc
7. R: 15 inc (30 sc)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sling stitch, cut yarn and sew up the end
Collar<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. R: 25 ch
2. R: [5 dc into after next stitch, skip, sc] 6x<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Put collar around the octopus and sew the ends together<\/p>\n\n\n\n
