DIY: How to crochet a baby rudolph-the-reindeer amigurumi

Somehow it became a tradition that I post a last minute tutorial shortly before a holiday. So today it is a small Rudolph, which you can make just in time for Christmas if you start quickly. But this is not only a tutorial, this is also my submission for a charity project by talu.de For each diy-blogpost linking to their project page they donate for the DKMS, an organization fighting cancer. But let’s get crocheting!

You need:

Less than one skein of brown yarn

Slightly too small crochet hook

Soft stuffing

Small red pompon (optional)

It is possible to make toys with this pattern. If you do so, please make sure to use child-safe-materials. Leave out the red pompon, which could be swallowed by small children.

Body

1. R.: crochet 16 sc directly to the head forming a small square. The front row should lie between rounds 11 and 12 of the head. The picture below shows how to crochet directly to another piece of your work: insert hook in front of a stitch and bring it out behind it. Pull yarn through, so you have two loops on your hook. Pull yarn through those two loops. Do 4sc in each direction, and end up with a square as shown in the last picture.

2. – 3. R: 16 sc

4. R: [3 sc, inc] 4 x (20 sc)

5. R: sc, inc, sc, inc, 6 sc, 4 inc, 6 sc (26 sc)

6. R: 15 sc, inc, sc, inc, sc, inc, 6 sc (29 sc)

7. R: 15 sc, inc, 2 sc, inc, 2 sc, inc, 7 sc (32 sc)

8. R: 16 sc, inc, 3 sc, inc, 3 sc, inc, 7 sc (35 sc)

9. R: 16 sc, inc, 4 sc, inc, 4 sc, inc, 8 sc (38 sc)

10. R: 2 sc, dec, 12 sc, inc, 5 sc, inc, 5 sc, inc, 8 sc (40 sc)

Legs (4 x)

1. Round: 12 sc in the first colour (for me it’s orange) – crochet them directly to the body as you did with the neck. Then sew up the beginning of the yarn. I actually start with the right front leg (from my perspective). I crochet a chain stitch around round 15 of the body and follow the middle line (wich is formed by the decreases of the body) to the front (3 sc), I then follow the line formed by the rounds of the body for a few stitches and do a slight bow to come back to round 15 (6 sc), I do the last 3 sc to meet the first one (not the ch) as you can see in the picture below:

2. – 4. Round: 12 sc (As you may see in the biggest picture, it is crucial for round 2 to do the first sc into the first sc (not the ch) of the 1st round. In any case you should have 12 sc in the end)

5. Round: 12 sc in the second colour (I took pink)

6. Round: sc around except inc 2 in the front middle (14 sc)

7. Round: sc around except inc 2 in the front middle (16 sc)

8. Round: 16 sc

Stuff

9. Round: [sc 2, dec] 4x (12 sc)

Stuff

10. Round: [sc, dec] 4x (8 sc)

11. Round: dec 4 (4 sc)

Cut yarn and sew up the end. Try to pull the yarn inside until you have a nearly flat bottom of the foot.

For the second leg, I start with the chain directly at the first leg and then crochet 3 sc to the left. I then follow the round line of the body to the front until the 9th sc meets the front line of the first leg. Then, there are three sc left to meet the first one and close the circle. Again, it is important to find the 1st sc for the second round.

The back legs are made in the same way: I start with the right one directly beneath the knot which closes the body. I crochet the first three sc over the knot to make it invisible. The last three sc of the second back leg are also crocheted over the knot.

Horns

1. R: Crochet 4 sc in a circle (or square) directly to the head. The frontmost stitch should be 3 rounds behind the eyes.

2. – 3. R: 4 sc

4. R: [sc, inc] 2 x (6 sc)

5. R: [2 sc, inc] 2 x (8 sc)

6. R: sc, leave out 4 sc, 3 sc (4 sc)

7. R: 4 sc, then cut yarn and sew up the end

6. & 7. R: above the stitches you left out before, you do: 1 sc, inc, 1 sc, dec 3 sc, then cut yarn and sew up the end

Ears

Start about 2 rounds behind and a little aside the horn (count two rounds back and 4 stitches towards the outside), then:

1. Row: Crochet 3 sc directly to the head (3 sc)

2. R: ch, inc, sc, inc (5 sc)

3. & 4. R: ch, 5 sc, turn (5 sc)

5. R: without ch, sc, dec (3 sc)

6. R: without ch, dec

Cut yarn and sew up the end

Do the other ear in the same way, starting 2 rounds behind and 2 stitches aside the left horn.

If you are using your amigurumi as decoration only you can glue or sew on the red pompon as nose.

Ready you are with your baby rudolph. Merry Christmas!
