Free Crochet Pattern: Howto turn a Unicorn into an Icelandic Horse

image1(7)My dear sister in law is a passionated horsewoman with a special love for Icelandic Horses. So for Christmas I designed a crocheted keychain in form of an Icelandic Horse for her. Today I want to share the pattern with you. It actually is a customization of my unicorn pattern, which, by doing a bit of magic to the hair, can be easily turned into a horse.

Here is what you need:

My free Unicorn Crochet Pattern

Crochet Yarn in white and beige

Hook size 0.75

A little bit of white cotton dk yarn (it works best if you take yarn you have already used once)

Crochet after the free unicorn pattern but leave out horn and hair. Use white for the body and beige for the hooves.

For mane and tail cut 8 peaces of white cotton dk yarn, about 10cm each. For the front part of the mane cut 2 peaces, 4 cm each.

Start between the ears and pull the shorter peaces of yarn through two neighbouring stitches as shown in the pictures below. Then pull the 8 longer peaces through 8 stitches one beneath the other in the same way (example pictures showing another crochet work which has more contrasting colours).

For the tail pull 4 peaces of yarn through 4 stitches forming a square at the back (see example picture). Then pull one peace of yarn through the middle of the square and repeat with another one crossing the first one. Use the two remaining peaces to enhance the tail were ever you think it’s needed.
In order to do the hair of your horse use a small comb to brush out the yarn. Then cut the front part of the mane forming a peak at the end. This part of the mane should end slightly higher than the eyes. If you roll the peak between your fingers a little, you’ll get a nice effect as you see in the picture above.

Cut the main part of the mane in a slight slant. When you use yarn you have alteady crocheted with you will now get a nice wavy effect.

Cut the tail in one line with the legs so that it will just touch the ground when the horse is standing.

Crochet a chain loop of about 15 chain stitches at the back of the had and pull it into a keychain ring.

Have fun crocheting and doing the hair of your Icelandic Horse!
