DIY: How to crochet an axolotl amigurumi

One of my subscribers on YouTube asked me to design an Axolotl amigurumi. Now that I finished it I really wonder why I did not come up with this idea myself. These creatures are so cute and I have had such fun coming up with a pattern. So today I want to share this cutie with you. Hope it brings you as much fun as I had with it.

Abbreviations:

ch = chain stitch

dc = double crochet

hdc = half double crochet

sc = single crochet

sl = slip stitch

You need:

50g of your main color (I use white cotton yarn by Three Bears Yarn, as this is child save, you can buy it here (affiliate link to Three Bears Yarn))

10g of your second color (I use pink)

a slightly too small hook (I use 3.0 for the above mentioned yarn, which has aran weight)

Soft filling (I use toy save polyester, which you can buy here (affiliate link to amazon))

Head and Body

Cut yarn and sew up the end.

Arms and legs

Right arm
1. R: crochet 8 sc directly to the side of the body. Fasten your yarn end with one chain stitch at the side of the body and crochet 2 sc upwoards. Turn your work by 90 degrees. Crochet 2 sc into the new direction. Turn your work by 90 degrees. Crochet 2 sc into the new direction. Turn your work by 90 degrees. Crochet 2 sc into the new direction. The last stitch should meet the first sc so that you have a small square of 8 sc altogether
2. – 3. R: 8 sc
4. R: sc, 3 sc into next stitch, 2 sc, 2 dec (8 sc)
5. R: 2 sc, 3 sc into next stitch, sc, 2 dec (8 sc)
6. R: dec, sc, 3 sc into next stitch, 2 sc, dec (8 sc)
7. R: dec, sc, 3 sc into next stitch, 2 sc, dec (8 sc)
8. R: 8 sc
9. R: 5 sc, 3 ch, 3 sc back along the ch (one sc into the second stitch from hook, one sc into the third from hook and one sc into the middle of the sc at the beginning of the chain), sc, 3 sc back along the ch, sc, 3 sc back along the ch
10. R: 2 dec, cut yarn and sew up the end

Left arm

Count 11 stitches to the left starting from the first stitch of the right arm. Then count three rounds towards the head from there. This is where you start anew. Use the same stitch counts as for the right arm. Just the last round has to be changed a bit so that the fingers look to the front.

Legs

count 9 rounds towards the tail starting from the arm. Then use the same stitch counts as before. Just the last round has to be modified again. Do the fingers into the 3 frontmost stitches.

Caudal fin

1. R: Start at the top of the tail and fasten your yarn with a chain stitch. Do one row of sc along the back up to the neck of your axolotl. Make sure you get one straight line. At the end of your row do one chain stitch and turn your work by 180 degrees.
2. R: sc, hdc, dc until you have only 3 stitches left, then do hdc, sc, sl.

Cut yatn and sew up the end.

External gills

Start on the right side of the head and count 9 rounds back towards the neck starting from round 1. From there go one stitch downwards and start anew. Fasten your yarn with one chain stitch, then:

1. R: Crochet 3 sc directly to the head following the rounds of it. Then turn your work by 180 degrees and crochet 3 sc back into the very same holes you used before. You should end up with a really flat round of 6 sc.
2. R: 6 sc
3. R: 6 sc
4. R: [sc, dec] 2x (4 sc)
5. R: 4 sc
6. R: 4 sc
7. R: 4 sc

Cut yarn and sew up the end

To do the second gill use the same holes you used for the 3rd stitch of the 1rst round of the first gill to start anew. Then use the same stitch count as for the first gill. Do the third one on this side in the same way.

leave out 6 stitches between gills no. 3 and 4 and do the gills on the left side in the same way you did the others.

Tie short pieces of pink yarn around the gills. Use a comb to make them look more realistic.

Ready you are with your axolotl.
