Not long ago I was asked by a very nice subscriber of my Youtube Channel, wether I could do a Toothless Amigurumi Tutorial. After thinking about translating an English pattern into German – I knew there were quite a few fantastic patterns – something carried me away from this idea and I absolutely had to do a dragon of my own. I started the pattern as a cal and it took me 8 weeks with 16 blog-posts in both German and English and 16 Video-Tutorials for beginners and skilled crocheters. Unfortunately I did not yet manage to do English subtitles for all of those videos, yet. But nevertheless I wanted to present you the whole pattern in one post. So here you go. Have fun crocheting this sweet little fellow and don’t hesitate contacting me if you have any questions.
Let’s go!
Here’s what you need for the dragon:
Black yarn (about 350m in total) -[Yarn, which you can use if you want to use your finished amigurumi as decoration item: http://amzn.to/2xuPAP2 (affiliate link to Amazon), yarn which you can use for toy making („Cotton Affection“) can be found here: http://www.threebearsyarn.co.uk/#_l_20 (affiliate link to Three Bears Yarn)]
Slightly too small crochet hook – [I like to work with these hooks: http://amzn.to/2iEodhY (affiliate link to amazon)]
Soft filling – [Filling you can use for decoration items and for toys: http://amzn.to/2vp2NeK (affiliate link to amazon)]
Green, black and white felt or yarn which is a bit lighter than the yarn you use for the body and a hook which is smaller than the one used for the body.
optional: Instead of sewing the arms and legs on, you can also use safety joints – [You find those items here: http://amzn.to/2xK66d0 (affiliate link to amazon)]
Abbreviations:
sc – single crochet

Triangular fins at the side of the head:
Start the first fin counting 8 stitches down from the right horn and then go back two rounds

For the second fin count 6 stitches down starting from the first one. Do the fin using the same stitch count.
Count 2 stitches down and 2 rounds back starting from the left horn and do the third fin in exactly the same way.
Finally start the fourth fin right underneath the third one.
Sew up all ends if you haven’t done so already.
Body
1. R: Crochet 32 sc directly to the head. Start counting from the lower fin on the right side of the head. Count 4 rounds down towards the back of the head and 2 stitches to the right from there. Crochet 8 sc to the left, then turn your work by 90 degrees and crochet 8 sc towards the front. Turn your work by 90 degrees again, crochet 8 sc to the side, turn your work once again and crochet 8 sc towards the back. You should meet your first stitch with the last one.
2. R: 32 sc
3. R: [6 sc, dec] 4x (28 sc)
4. R: [5 sc, dec] 4x (24 sc)

Stuff
26. R: [sc, dec] 6x (12 sc)
Stuff again
27. R: 6 dec
Cut yarn and sew up the end.
Legs
You can do the legs in three ways. You can either fasten them with safety joints or sew them onto the body or you can crochet them directly to the body. If you want to do the latter, you will have to use a slightly different pattern, which I give you at the end of this post. But let’s start with the first two possibilities:
1. R: 6 sc into magic ring
2. R: 2 inc, sc, 2 inc, sc (10 sc)
3. R: 2 sc, 2 inc, 3 sc, 2 inc, sc (14 sc)
4. R: 3 sc, 2 inc, 5 sc, 2 inc, 2 sc (18 sc)
5. – 7. R: 18 sc
8. R: 3 sc, 2 dec, 5 sc, 2 x 2 dec, 2 sc (14 sc)
9. R: 3 sc, 2 dec, 5 sc, 2 dec, 2 sc (12 sc)
(Insert the part of the safety joint with the spike between rounds 3 and 4, now, if you want to use safety joints)
10. – 19. R: 12 sc
20. R: 4 sc, 5 Popcorn-stitches with 4 hdc each, 3 sc
Stuff
21. R: 6 dec
Cut yarn and sew up the end.
You can either fasten the legs with safety joints between rounds 19 and 20 or you sew them onto the body at the same hight.
If you use safety joints, you still have to stuff the body and close it with Round 27 (6 dec) and sew up the end.
If you want to crochet the legs directly to the body, please follow this pattern:
Right leg (seen from your side):
1. R: crochet 16 sc directly to the body in a little square starting at round 16 counting down from the arm
2. R: 16 sc
3. R: 5 sc, 2 x 3 sc into next stitch, sc, 4 dec (16 sc)
4. R: 6 sc, 3 sc into next stitch, 5 sc, 2 dec (16 sc)
5. R: 2 dec, 8 sc, 2 dec (12 sc)
8. – 17. R: 12 sc
20. R: 2 Popcorn-stitches with 4 hdc each (12 M)
Stuff
21. R: 6 x 2 dec
Cut yarn and sew up the end.
Use the same pattern for the other leg, exept of round 3 and 20 which you do as follows:
3. R: dec, 3 sc, 2 x 3 stitches into next stitch, 3 sc, 3 dec (16 sc)
20. R: 6 sc, 5 Popcorn-stitches with 4 hdc each, sc (12 stitches)
Arms
You can crochet the arms in three different ways – you either fasten them with safety joints, sew them onto the body or crochet them directly to the body. If you want to do the latter, please follow the pattern at the end of this post.
Arms to fasten with safety joints or to sew onto the body (2 x)
1. R: 6 sc into magic ring
2. R: 6 inc (12 sc)
3. – 5. R: 12 sc
Insert the part of the safety joint with the spike between rounds 3 and 4 (leave out if you don’t use safety joints)
6. – 20. R: 12 sc
21. R: 6 sc, 5 Popcorn-stitches with 4 hdc each
22. R: 6 dec
Cut yarn and sew up the end
Fasten the arms with the safety joints between rounds 8 and 9 of the body or sew them to it.
If you use safety eyes you will still have to leave the body open until you have done the legs.
Tail
- R: crochet 24 sc directly to the body. Count 2 rounds down from the left downside corner of the leg. Fasten your yarn end with a chain stitch and do 6 sc to the left. Turn your work by 90 degrees and do 6 sc into the new direction (up), turn your work by 90 degrees again and do 6 sc into the new direction, turn one last time by 90 degrees and do 6 sc into the new direction. You should end up with a square of 24 sc
- R: 24 sc
- R: 14 sc, 2 dec, 6 sc (22 sc)
- R: 22 sc
- R: 14 sc, 2 dec, 4 sc (20 sc)
- – 11. R: 20 sc
- R: 2 dec, 8 sc, 2 dec, 8 sc (18 sc)
- R: 18 sc
- R: 2 dec, 7 sc, 2 dec, 7 sc (16 sc)
- R: 16 sc
- R: 5 sc, 2 dec, 9 sc (15 sc)
- R: 5 sc, 2 dec, 8 sc (14 sc)
- R: 5 sc, 2 dec, 7 sc (13 sc)
- R: 5 sc, 2 dec, 6 sc (12 sc)
- R: 5 sc, 2 dec, 5 sc (11 sc)
- R: 5 sc, 2 dec, 4 sc (10 sc)
- R: 5 sc, 2 dec, 3 sc (9 sc)
- R: 5 sc, 2 dec, 2 sc (8 sc)
- R: 4 x 2 dec
Cut yarn and sew up the end.
Fins at the end of the tail.
Do one side with black and one side with red yarn
- R: crochet 3 sc directly to the tail. Start one round underneath the top and work down the side.
- R: ch, 3 inc (6 sc)
- R: ch, inc, 3 sc, dec (6 sc)
- R: dec, 3 sc, inc (6 sc)
- R: ch, inc, 3 sc, dec (6 sc)
- R: dec, 3 sc, inc (6 sc)
Cut yarn and sew up the end. Do the other side in exactly the same way.
Wings
- R: Crochet 8 sc directly to the back of your dragon. Count 10 rounds down from the head in order to find the hight where you should start. Do 4 sc upwords, turn your work by 180 degrees and do 4 sc back into the very same stitches, so you’ll get a very flat round. If you don’t want to crochet the wings directly to the body, start with 8 chain stitches, which you connect to a ring with a sling stitch.
- R: 8 sc
- R: 3 sc into next stitch, 2 sc, 2 x 3 sc into next stitch, 2 sc, 3 sc into next stitch (16 sc)
- R: 2 x 3 sc into next stitch, 6 sc, 2 x 3 sc into next stitch, 6 sc (24 sc)
- R: 2 sc, 2 x 3 sc into next stitch, 10 sc, 2 dec, 6 sc (26 sc)
- R: 2 sc, 2 x 3 sc into next stitch, 11 sc, 2 dec, 7 sc (28 sc)
- R: 4 sc, 2 x 3 sc into next stitch, 12 sc, 2 dec, 6 sc (30 sc
8 R: 6 sc, 2 x 3 sc into next stitch, 12 sc, 2 dec, 6 sc (32 sc)
- R: 24 sc, 2 dec, 4 sc, (30 sc)
- R: 23 sc, 2 dec, 3 sc (28 sc)
- R: 22 sc, 2 dec, 2 sc (26 sc)
- R: 21 sc, 2 dec, sc (24 sc)
- R: 20 sc, 2 dec (22 sc)
- R: dec, 18 sc, dec (20 sc)
- R: dec, 16 sc, dec (18 sc)
- R: dec, 14 sc, dec (16 sc)
- R: dec, 12 sc, 2 dec (14 sc)
- R: [5 sc, dec] 2x (12 sc)
- R: 12 sc
- R: [4 sc, dec] 2x (10 sc)
- R: 10 sc
- R: [3 sc, dec] 2x (8 sc)
- R: 8 sc
- R: [2 sc, dec] 2x (6 sc)
- R: 6 sc
- R: [sc, dec] 2 x (4 sc)
Cut yarn and sew up the ends. The other wing is crocheted in the same way starting Parallel to the first one. If you decided to sew the wings to the body, this is what you should do when finished with both wings. Make sure they end up in Parallel to each other.
Wow, this has been a long way, but you have done it! Well done!
