Sometimes I find it very inspiring to look at the keywords which led you to my blog. Sometimes they are very precise, sometimes they seem to be a little absurd. And sometimes they make me grab my crochet hook right away. This has been the case lately when I saw that one of you was searching for a crochet unicorn keychain. And here comes the pattern:
You need
Some yarn in two contrasting colours and bits and pieces of yarn in all colours of the rainbow as well as black. I used a 6 ply cotton yarn
Crochet hook size 1.5, find my favorite crochet hooks here (affiliate link to amazon)
Abbreviations:
Ch – chain
Dec – decrease
Inc – increase
Sc – single crochet
Sl – sling stitch
Off we go!
Head
1. Round: 4 ch
2. Round: inc in 2nd stitch from hook, inc, 3 sc in last stitch, continue on the other side with inc, sc in last stitch (10 Sc)
3. Round: 10 Sc
4. Round: 10 Sc
5. Round: sc, inc 6, 3 Sc (16 Sc)
6. Round: 6 sc, inc 4, 6 sc (20 sc)
7. – 11. Round: 20 Sc
12. Round: [2 sc, dec] 5 x (15 Sc)
13. Round: [sc, dec] 5 x (10 Sc)
14. Round: dec 5 (5 Sc)
Cut yarn and sew up the end
Body
1. Round: Crochet 12 sc in square directly to the downside of the head as shown in example picture. The square should be situated between round 7 and 11.
2. Round: 12 Sc
3. Round: 12 Sc
4. Round: 6 sc, inc 3, 3 sc (15 sc)
5. Round: sc around, except [inc, sc, inc, sc, inc] on the backside (18 sc)
6. Round: sc around, except [inc, 2 sc, inc, 2 sc inc] on the backside (21 sc)
7. Round: sc around, except [inc, 3 sc, inc, 3 sc inc] on the backside (24 sc)
8. Round: sc around, except [inc, 4 sc, inc, 4 sc inc] on the backside and dec in the middle of the frontside (26 sc)
9. Round: sc around, except [inc, 5 sc, inc, 5 sc, inc] on the backside and dec in the middle of the frontside (28 sc)
10. Round: sc around, except [inc, 6 sc, inc, 6 sc inc] on the backside and dec in the middle of the frontside (30 sc)
11. Round: [4 sc, dec] 6x (24 sc)
12. Round: [3 sc, dec] 6x (18 sc)
13. Round: [2 sc, dec] 6x (12 sc)
13. Round: [sc, dec] 6x (6 sc)
14. Round: dec 3x (3 sc)
Cut yarn and sew up the end
Legs (4 x)
1. Round: crochet 8 sc in a square directly to the downside of the body (as you did with the neck)
2. Round: 8 sc
3. Round: 8 sc
4. Round: start with 2nd colour, sc arond except inc in the middle of the front (9 sc)
5. Round: 9 sc
6. Round: dec 5
Cut yarn and sew up the end. Pul it through the body until you get an almost even foot.
Horn
1. Round: crochet 4 sc in a square directly to the downside of the body (4 sc)
2. – 3. Round: 4 sc
4. Round: dec 2
Cut yarn and sew up the end
Ears (2 x)
1. Row: crochet 3 sc to the head on the right (or left) side behind the horn. Start from the outside and move to the inner side
2. Row: ch 1, 2 sc back (3 sc)
3. Row: ch 1, crochet 2 sc together (1 tuft mesh)
Start to crochet at least 7 chains of ch 20 between the ears and go down a little with each chain. Take all the colours you want for it to make it very colourful.
Take the same colours to crochet chains of ch 15 in 3 rows to the back of the body forming the tail. If you take the seven colours of the rainbow as I did, you will get one row of 2 chains, one of 3 chains and again one of 2 chains underneath each other.
To balance a chain loop for hanging your unicorn to a key ring, try to put a needle through a stitch on the backside of the head. If you hold it on one end and you like the way the unicorn hangs, this is where you should put your chain loop. If you do not like it, try another stitch until you found one which suits you. Crochet ch 20 and finish the loop with sl 1. cut yarn and sew up the ends.

I wish there were more detailed instructions. Increase on the back side of the neck. On what stitch would be nice to know. It really lacks more details. Like how to even start to crochet on the already made head and such things. Pictures with showing where to start and instructions like this.
Hi Lili,
Thanks a lot for your comment! I put in an example picture to show how the first round of the body crocheted to the head should look. I also put in the stitch count for the first increasing round. For the other rounds an exact count is not really necessary. Just try to get the middle with the second increase. In the following rounds put each increase over the increase of the previous round.
I hope this helps a little for now, if this is not the case, I will makeover the pattern, soon.
I will try to work around it. On round 8th you have the wrong number of stitches written. On round 7 we have 24 stitches, and on 8th it should say 27, not 26, we make 3 increases, not only 2.
And now I noticed you do the same mistake for all the next rounds 🙁 There are 3 increases from rounds 8 – 10, and you only add 2 stitches in your stitches count.

Sind es „1.5mm hook“ und „cotton thread“? Ich frage mich ob hook nummern sind die gleiche wie hier in den USA?
